SCOPE OF WORK
The primary responsibilities of the Senior Counsel / Counsel will be:
- Working with the team to develop and implement Everytown Law’s national federal and state court affirmative litigation practice including legal research, factual development, and strategy analysis.
- Litigating cases in conjunction with national and local co-counsel including overseeing the management and strategy of cases and supervising team members.
- Drafting and editing memos, complaints, pleadings, and appellate and trial court briefs.

QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. and membership in a state bar.
- 6+ years of litigation experience preferred.
- Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and outstanding attention to detail, including an ability to explain complex legal concepts to both legal and non-legal audiences.
- Trial, oral argument, and/or deposition experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to run a case independently and supervise more junior attorneys and case teams strongly preferred.

Access Justice Brooklyn has an exciting opportunity for an attorney to serve as a staff attorney for its consumer law practice. The staff attorney will oversee all aspects of our Volunteer Lawyer for the Day Consumer Debt Program (VLFD) program in Kings County Civil Court, and will work with our director of legal services and staff to strengthen our consumer debt practice, including Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act practice, and The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office (CLARO), which delivers critical advice and representation to hundreds of litigants a year. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage all aspects of the Access Justice Brooklyn’s VLFD program

- Mentor and support volunteer attorneys, law students, and staff handling consumer debt and bankruptcy matters

- Conduct intake and provide advice and brief services to Brooklyn residents who are proceeding pro se in consumer debt and bankruptcy matters

- Excellent work ethic, willing to travel on regular basis to Immigration Court in New York City and other venues of Long Island.
- Ability to write legal briefs, motions and petitions before EOIR, USCIS, ICE, CBP, and preferably to have prior immigration court litigation and family court experience.
- Have experience in real estate, personal injury, or matrimonial is a plus.
- Work closely with paralegals maintaining accurate records and notes on all cases.
- Bilingual or Conversational in Spanish.
Suffolk County Assigned Counsel Defender
January 28, 2021The Assigned Counsel Defender Plan of Suffolk County (“SCACP”) is a not-for-profit organization seeking qualified attorneys who are willing to accept assignment of cases pursuant to County Law 18b. Particularly, they are in need of Spanish speaking attorneys, as the panels are woefully short on such bilingual attorneys.
Being on the Assigned Counsel Panel allows you to seek justice for indigent clients throughout the County. It also allows you to maintain your status as a sole practitioner or law firm, as our attorneys serve as private contractors. Our program provides supervision, training and support for all panel members. Assignments will depend on your experience level.
Once we receive an application, it is reviewed by the Administrator and the Screening Committee is convened for an interview with the applicant(s).
