Oscar Michelen, Esq.
Oscar Michelen was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, emigrated to the United States with his parents and brothers and grew up in the Bronx. Mr. Michelen
attended New York Law School, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1985. He was graduated magna cum laude and served as an Editor on the Law Review. He served as a law clerk for the Hon Vincent Broderick of the Southern District of New York. He then went to the Office of the Corporation Counsel (lawyers for the City of New York) and in two years rose to become the City’s chief trial attorney; he was the youngest person and first Hispanic to ever hold this position. He is currently a partner at Cuomo LLC, a litigation boutique with offices in Manhattan and Long Island where he specializes in litigation in both Federal and State courts. Mr. Michelen has also been admitted to practice in various states around the country for specific litigation matters as both trial counsel and as an expert witness on a variety of legal topics. He was an adjunct professor of law at New York Law School for 8 years and currently taught as an adjunct professor of law at Touro Law School for three years.
In addition to his regular practice, he also handles cases of wrongful conviction, having exonerated 9 people in 10 separate cases over the past 16 years. He has represented numerous other exonerees in civil actions arising out of their wrongful convictions. Mr. Michelen is active in several organizations within the Dominican-American community as well as serving as the immediate Part President of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association and sitting on the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Legal Aid Society and the Nassau County Bar Association.
